I didn't find Belize to be that bad, considering. Well, Belize City is
a SH that one should not go to but the countryside was fairly nice and
the people seemed to be getting by fairly well. And the brewery is
right next to the airport so you can load up on the way away.
DR is run by 7 (?) families going back to colonial times, everyone else
is superfluous. And if you are black, having escaped the other end of
the island, you are worse than superfluous. Notice on the roads the
houses built right up against them in what would be the right-of-way
here -- that land is "public" so people build their houses there.
Trucks rolling through these little villages at 70mph, the drivers would
speed up to be macho. Little kids playing in the roads, right up
against it.... I did manage to get a nice tropical trots disease in the
DR, and got reported to the Board of Health when I got home and sorted out.
