Banned (from what I've heard) is not everyone's cup of tea as an alternative for off-topic subjects. Other attempts in the past to spin off sub-interest lists did not meet with much success (what about the linux list? the diesel tech list? any activity there these days?)
Other constraints on my time have prevented me from participating here lately. I've kept an eye on the subject lines but really do not even read most of the messages. I deal with the "delete" issue by simply deleting entire threads in one fell swoop if the subject appears to be off-topic. My impression is that the list has evolved into a forum where the majority of discussion is not strictly MB related. It's more like a group of friends who have MB as a common interest, but like to talk about a lot of other stuff too, and occasionally a technical MB topic will come up. It seems to keep the regulars interested. On the other hand the noise might drive away a lot of new arrivals who don't want to bother weeding thorough all the chatter. We might get away with moderating the political discussion, the same way we moderate obscene language, but one person's interesting current events discussion is another person's "politics." To me it's much more of a grey area and slippery slope to a strictly censored list that is no fun anymore. Then everyone will just move on. All I can say is, be careful. Allan "Kaleb C.
