thanks peter - just ordered a pair. I have the steering rod that goes
in the middle - may as well do it all at once and get it over with.
when it's done I'll need an alignment.

easier and not much more expensive than the outers only -- they will
be VERY rusted in place, and you will end up taking the old assembly
out to beat on the threaded portions so you and unscrew the old one,
and at that point it's easier to just set the length the same and put
it back in.
I learned this the hard way, never ever bother with just the outer
joint, buy the whole tie rod.
