Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed or one can be assembled out of washers and a (bolt?) I tried to replace those same bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without success, but still have the bushings which might be the same since both cars are '83 123s. Gerry

There are two sets of plastic bushings. One set at each end of the round rod that connects the shifter to the transmission and another set on the shifter shaft where it pivots fore and aft. With new/good bushings it will be tight and smooth as butter. On the other hand it could be an internal problem (parking pawl) in the transmission.
