This would have been in the late 60s when I was but a sprout. Now that I think about it, the engine did sound like it belonged in a tractor. It was loud!

The original Scout had an I4 of a displacement I can't remember (152?). Later
models got a larger I4 (194?), then the 288 V8, 304 V8 and 345 V8. Also not to
be forgotten was the Nissan 3 liter I6 diesel.

All of them were slow turning as was the practice in tractor engines...

When I was a kid the guy across the street always had IH Scouts as he
"worked" at the IH truck plant in town and I guess he got some break
on them. In the winter, even when it was like -20F he would go out in
the morning and start the thing, then floor it immediately, and stick
his window scraper on the pedal to hold it down while he went in for
his coffee and it warmed up. My dad would always be amazed the things
did not blow up from the abuse.

Have you ever seen how big the engine is in one of those things? Only
345 cubes if I recall but a huge beast of an engine.
My father had one in a 5 ton truck.
I also knew a fellow who had a Travelall - the IH version of a Suburban.
It was sort of funny because he had hot rod Plymouth cars before he got
married and as soon as they had children, he swapped for the Travelall.
