Larry,

The shock is the only "safety" which holds the rear suspension spring in
place.  When you remove the shock, you must support either the wheel or the
spring link, so the suspension does not extend further and explosively
release the spring.

You can safely remove the springs by detaching the shocks and then jacking
up the car to relieve the pressure on the springs, and they will simply
fall out of the car.
