The shock limits downward spring link travel and will be holding spring pressure when you lift the wheels off the ground. You must either have vehicle weight on the wheel and spring link or lift the wheel carrier and spring link put against the spring pressure to remove the lower shock bolt AND to install a new shock.

I believe this can be done on a lift, but failing that, jack the car up and put it on jack stands, then use a floor jack to lift up the spring link a couple inches before removing the shock. Do not lower the link until you have the new shock installed unless you unbolt it from the wheel carrier and lower it to remove the spring.
