We bought an '86 with the 6.2 diesel and took it on our move from LI NY to Vancouver Canada. It carried 5 of us plus a bunch of our stuff. We kept it for 7 or 8 years, towed a travel trailer a bit, carried a canoe on the roof. The Mexican engine was not the best and the inner race of the rear wheel bearings was the axle itself, requiring an expensive replacement. I have since stuck to Fords 3/4 and 1 ton PUs for towing with better results.
However, the form factor was right for my family at the time.
