OpenOffice was purchased by Oracle. Nothing had changed for a
_long_ time, which wasn't much of a surprise looking at Oracle and
open source software. So most of the clever people there got fed
up with do-nothing and created a fork that is more
open/free/libre. This is called "LibreOffice". At first, there it
wasn't as smooth - but it's good now.
Then OpenOffice was bought by Apache - who really does understand
(grok) open source. It is now being developed again.
So there are two. Which is better? I like the license of
LibreOffice better. But there is very little difference from the
perspective of a casual user. A "power" user may encounter some
differences, but even those are fairly minor, so far as I can tell.
___
Libre office also
1. eliminates the necessity to have to fool with adobe reader
2. Writes to .pdf
3. has "Draw" installed, a Visio counterpart
4. has a database as part of the office suite
The pdf writing and opening is great. Adobe keeps getting more
onerous to download reader without all the malware/ransomware pups
attached to it.
I have never tried to use the database, so I can't comment on that.
Libre office can be installed beside M$ orifice, so you can try it
and get used to it before you switch. on older machines where
orifice is already installed, you can keep it for the situation you
might encounter where you really have to have office for something.
The only situation I have encountered where Office was needed was a
narrated powerpoint a few years ago. It is possible the current
version of Libre office will handle that, but I don't know.
It is much more robust than open office was when it was left to the
backwaters of oracle.
