The problem is with the asshatchet seats on road bikes you need the
padding on the riding shorts/longs to minimize harm to the nether
regions. Spandex helps to keep you cool too on longer rides, winter or
summer, because the sweat needs to wick away and evaporate. Having
started with my old Schwinn 10-spd (which I still have) and jeans and
sneakers and tshirts, and now on a Trek carbon road bike, I can say for
a certainty that the carbon bike and the riding gear is light-years
ahead of the old style riding style!
