It can't be a VW transaxle unless the differential ring gear is flopped to the other side. (I know this was possible with some VW transaxles, but I don't know which ones.) The 914 is mid-engined, not rear-engined, so a VW transaxle would otherwise result in a car with one forward gear and four reverse. ;)
