My "new" 86 190D 2.5 Euro definitely starts in 2nd unless I put my
foot into it a little further.

Note:
In selector lever posititon "D" and "3" the vehicle will start off in
2nd gear when accelerating gently. The vehicle will start off in 1st
gear when accelerating briskly.
