Having it checked for the presence of coolant or exhaust would be an easy way to get some piece of mind. Before our '82 240D was converted to a 240D/3.0, it had problems with coolant level dropping. It turned out to be a pinhole in the side of the radiator that leaked slowly when it was hot. Leaking only when hot, so the leakage evaporated, and being on the side, where one could not see it, both contributed to the difficulty of finding the problem. It finally went away when I changed the radiator to a 300D radiator.
