My 85 300D was doing the same thing. I discovered the bendy line from the drivers side block to the heater line had a crack in it. It would only have a notable leak when coolant was full. I kept filling it up every couple of days before I left for work and would not see any leaks. I finally filled it when it was hot, I think I had the heater running, and noticed the leak. I loosened the cap and ordered a new hose from Gary. All is well now.
