Does it not all unscrew from the drain?
I think there is a threaded hole in the center of the cross hatch in the bottom of the drain.
You should be able to turn the whole thing out.
I think the set screw mentioned is to facilitate a height or depth adjustment.

However, there may be other versions and your drain may not match the one we have.

Dan, I'll check again.

Kaleb, yes there is a screw that allows the stopper / top portion to be
removed, very handy for cleaning out hairballs etc.

Once the stopper is removed, there seat that provides the other half of the
seal is still mounted in the tub. If that seat has corroded, can it be
restored or would I need to remove and replace that?

Are you sure?

I have stoppers like that of the same vintage, and they all have O rings
on the stopper that provide the seal. They also use a Phillips head screw
under the stopper to hold it on the shaft. You unscrew the screw to remove
the top of the stopper (knob) to get into the drain in order to clean it
out.

We've got two bathtubs about twenty years old, and the drain stoppers are
tired and don't hold water very well. Both have built-in drain stoppers
that you pull up and rotate to open, and twist a bit until it hits the
right spot to drop down when you want the drain closed.

I've looked at them in the past, and I didn't see any rubber part that
can
be replaced. I fear that the entire drain/stopper assembly needs to be
replaced, but I really don't want to pull out a bathtub or shower stall
if
that is what is required.
