I think that if I'd gone over proper starting procedure with her immediately 
before the attempt it would have made it. She should have double glowed and 
then cranked on it until it started or the battery died.The PD engine cars have 
had 2 different recalls for glow plugs. The first generation didn't last well, 
the second didn't start well. Supposedly the NGK plugs they ended up with are 
pretty good. I need to check and see whats in the car now. The NGK plugs are 
$125 for a set. If it has the second generation 5v plugs VW has an extended 
warranty that should replace them for free.
I'll put a new battery in the car next fall too. I did get the car started 
yesterday but it threw a code about low voltage which I presume was at the end 
of the second failed start attempt. It was reporting over 14v while running 
yesterday though.
