Good to know, but it still sounds like a disease.

Sounds interesting other than that.
From http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/
Sylpheed runs on many systems such as Windows,
Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and other Unix-like systems.

MBox is a file per mailbox/folder. Maildir is the file per email
format.
I was indeed wrong about the MBox format.
From http://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/features.html
Messages are managed with MH format on which a file
corresponds to a message, so you can easily backup,
migrate, and process them with other applications.
There is also less risk of mail loss when a system
failure occurs, compared to formats on which a file
corresponds to a folder. Messages are instantly moved
or deleted with this format when asked to, so users
don't have to perform periodic compaction of mailboxes
by hand to prevent the growth of mailboxes.

Sylpheed uses the MBox format -- a file for each email.
It's available for Linux and Winders.

What's the current thought on VMs? Is Virtual Box still as good

I want to install a VM and put 10.6.8 on it via time machine
restore so I can still access the eudora files from 10.11 El Crap.
I started out rolling my own using qemu. Then I used VMWare
no-cost stuff, but dealing with all the kernel patches to make it
work with stock Debian was a pain. By then, VirtualBox free/open
was doing well and was in the Debian repository - so I migrated.
I've been using it quite a lot since. Not just for MSWin. I have
a few Linux guests too.
VirtualBox seems to need more RAM than VMWare did. But the
simplicity of using it and the free/open license has been worth it
for me.
One thing I really like is how easy it is to copy my MSWin install
from one host to another. Export> Import - done.
The VirtualBox "hardware" is almost certainly different than what
was running your OS when you made the TimeMachine backup. I don't
know how it will do restoring...
And, I recall that Eudora used MBox format. That is a very widely
used format with lots of tools for manipulating, converting, etc.
You shouldn't have to use a guest OS just to access old Eudora
files - unless you want to _run_ Eudora.

What's the current thought on VMs? Is Virtual Box still as good as
any free one? I installed Vbox in 2012, but never used it. If I had
ever needed winders, I had planned to put it on the VBox. I want to
install a VM and put 10.6.8 on it via time machine restore so I can
still access the eudora files from 10.11 El Crap.
