So that includes the VW engines and their asian knock-offs. ...along with pretty much all engines designed before 1990

Yes.

Most "modern" engines are now roller tappet, meaning the
friction face of the tappet is, in fact a rolling cylinder, on bearings
or bushings. In a flat tappet engine, the only protection the
hardened face of the camshaft has is the oil film.
