I think that depends an who your electric company is. We are with
the Clay Electric Coop. My solar array has been working now for
about 2 months or so and has turned the meter from 000000 when it
was installed and the system hooked up to 999450 while at the
same time providing electricity for the AC and dome. There is
only the one meter so that is net metering. Of course I won't get
paid till the end of Dec so I won't know till then what the
amount will be per KW but they did say it will be the same as
what I would be charged for the same amount. No added tax burden
from the county for the system either or so I have been told and
I was not charged any state or local sales tax. Estimated payback
for the system is 12-14 years.
So far so good. I'm happy.

Yeah, don't get me started on Florida and solar. We could easily
be net metering rather than paying as much as $180/month in peak
times to cool our house.
The only place it's been successful here is when developers do it
across the board on new construction. Under those circumstances
the utilities don't have a say. As individual consumers, we're
powerless (no pun intended) against the utility lobbyists. Even
if you spend your own money to do it they bone you on the rates,
pushing your payback out many years.
