I don't live in a bad area but we have been broken into a couple of times on the street in front of our house. They broke the window in my d-in-l's car and punched the locks out of my 02 Supercrew on separate occasions. Someone took the star off the hood on my car while parked in a lot in front of a store etc. I knew kids back in the day who sort of collected shifter knobs from cars. We left a set of keys hanging in the door of one of our cars over a weekend a few years back and the keys and the car were still there when we got back. It was on the curb side so that likely helped.

I loved that car, it was so ratty I never worried about leaving it anywhere. My
Jetta is pretty much at that level now although I did some cosmetic rust repair
yesterday...
