The ML has a little metal key that comes out of the dongle. I also
learned there is a way to start it with the key instead of the push
button, but only if the vehicle battery is alive.

SWMBO to take they key out and how to use it in the door. Since that
apparently did not happen, I am guessing the 08 may not have the "key"
and may be "push and pray."
I refuse to buy anything that is "push and pray" I do not want the
lives of myself an others dependent on software when there is an easy
alternative, a physical switch. This stance will condemn me to older
and older cars or cheaper and crummier cars as time goes by. Long

Isn't there an "emergency" physical key? Seems that if both of you
carried one of those, problems with the fob could be easily overcome
in the short term so they could be diagnosed more comfortably later.
