I don't think this is true now.  The Moto G4 I just bought handles CDMA or GSM, 
depending on the SIM card.  User reviews on Amazon confirms this.

        GSM:    850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz
        UMTS: 850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz
        LTE (FDD): Bands 12, 13, 5, 26, 8, 4, 3, 2, 25, 1, 7

        Data: LTE Cat 4 (150/50 Mbit/s), HSPA, UMTS
