Their goal is to stop that oil from coming here altogether, so this is just one battle in that war.

I had an interesting conversation with this young woman a year or so ago over a local issue where there is (was) a scheme to do seismic exploration and drilling offshore here. It is a completely stupid idea for a variety of reasons, with no upside I can see and no one on the "pro" side could adequately articulate. We were in agreement on that, but then she (and I have known her for awhile with not entire respect) made some stupid comment about oil spills from offshore drilling in the Gulf (and that big blowout a few years ago was her main issue, which is perfectly reasonable) and that all offshore drilling should cease. I pointed out that in the Gulf, and I think on the SoCal coast, that oil production had actually improved the cleanliness of the coast and beaches and marshes and such, since the pressure was taken off the pools and it was no longer seeping and being pushed up into the water to float to shore and pollute everything. She kinda went blank on that idea, which I then pointed out was the main issue with the BP spill, all that stuff is down under there under some pretty high pressure, and pumping it reduces the pressure, and if done properly, as it mostly has been for at least 30 or 40 years or more, it is safe and actually has some significant environmental benefits.

Sometimes, as I well know, zeal can either be due to ignorance or to calculation.

I got this spam yesterday about the Dakota pipeline. I guess the Sierra Club would rather transport the oil with "nasty, dirty diesel trucks and train" that "history has taught us it's not a matter of if, rather when will they crash" and cause a spill. *sigh*

Take Action with the Sierra Club

History made! The Obama administration just announced that
it will not grant the final easement for the Dakota Access
    Pipeline!

The fight to reject the Dakota Access Pipeline isn't over
and we aren't going to back down until this pipeline is
rejected once and for all, but the administration's
announcement today ensures Energy Transfer Partners can't
continue its assault on the Standing Rock Sioux's
    ancestral homelands.

History has taught us that it's never a question whether
a pipeline will spill, rather a question of when, and a
comprehensive environmental review will show that this
dirty and dangerous project will threaten the safety of
    every community it cuts through.
