Traction control can make a huge difference. My '96 Dakota was a decent truck
but would spin the tires on wet grass and was useless in any amount of snow
unless it was in 4wd.
Our '10 Dodge RAM is more powerful but the traction control keeps it planted.
I've been walking the dog in a new spot while scouting for game, the area has
about a 1/2 mile driveway/road which is totally ice covered and the other day I
only needed 4wd for about a 100 foot section and thats only because I didn't
carry enough momentum. Even in 4wd it was difficult to get going again.
I'd love to have an old truck (about a '72 Chevy 3/4 ton, 4wd with a 350) to
play around with but for actually doing stuff ours is hard to beat.

I think one reason to get a new or considerably newer car than the '82 diesel
Mercedes that I drive is that newer cars are much safer. Many have 7 or more
airbags with active traction control and ABS.
