For lighting it's hard to beat the Aladdin kerosene lamps. Various other lamps and flashlights are good to have, but as a primary backup light source our two Aladdins are it. Considering how ill-designed our house is for off-grid living, we've still got it pretty good when the juice stops flowing. Water's the worst problem, because of the well. But even then in the worst case we can open the cistern and use a bucket.
