Sure, it seems wrong when you've bought a ticket...but that would only be fair
if you were charged for the seat whether you boarded the flight or not.
Probably more people would object to that. The punishment will be that
publicity for events like this will motivate flyers to avoid an airline whose
algorithms for overbooking lead to more of this. I think some airlines would
tolerate more empty seats to avoid this.

The bottom line here is that even an MD who has to work the next day is subject
to the vagaries of commercial airline travel. If you're bumped you get off the
plane without a fight. If you know in advance that it will be a matter of life
and death, you allow additional time for problems.

Air travel is not as enjoyable as it once was. Even though I have lifetime
flight benefits through SWMBO's former work, I'd rather be driving (a
Mercedes...obligatory On Topic addition).

I've always wondered what would happen if they couldn't get enough people to
volunteer...
I feel like possession is 9/10s, if you're in the seat somebody else gets
bumped.
The "compensation" they offer you always sucks. Like $200 when you get off a
cross country flight. There was an idea at one point that there should be an
auction. So I say I'm willing to give up my seat for $1000, if you think $500
is reasonable you could bid against me. The airlines are, of course, against it
because it will cost them money.
At some point they're going to have to stop overbooking flights, I don't
understand why its okay to sell something multiple times on the assumption that
some of the people won't want them.

Subject: [MBZ] (Doctor?) dragged off United AIrlines flight

Video circulating on Twitter shows the moment a man was forcibly dragged off a
United Airlines flight Sunday night. According to the passenger who posted the
video and statements from United, the flight was overbooked, and several
passengers were randomly bumped off the flight.

One of the unlucky few claimed to be a doctor who had to be at work the next
day, so he refused to get out of his seat and leave the aircraft. As you can
see in the video, police and airport employees forcibly drag him out of his
seat and down the aisle, leaving him bloodied and dazed in the process.
