Luckily on this car (the 99 740iL with 105K miles), it doesn't use or leak any oil. Since I have been driving so much lately I pushed it a little longer than I normally do. I had driven almost 10,000 miles on the Mobil 1 and it never needed a top up. My other one with 234K miles has only needed a half quart in 7,000 miles. And that was only once or twice.
My wife's Cadillac SUV is a completely different story. It will need 1.5 quarts in 3,000 miles. It takes 6 qts for an oil change. AND it has 130K miles on the 3.6 engine that most owners report will use 1-2 qts in 4-5,000 miles.
