We finally had a warm day without rain and I worked on my transmission
problem. The wiring traced out okay. I drove around the block until the
engine warmed up, then floored it. The engine went to 5000 rpm and the
tranny stayed in second. As soon as I let up on the gas, the transmission
shifted and has been fine ever since. Did a 200 mile trip yesterday on both
highway and through rural Ohio - it's like nothing ever happened. I had
replaced the transmission filter and filled it with M-1 when I had the
engine out - about 3000 miles ago.
Is this a sign of trouble to come, or just a fluke?

What you experienced IS worrisome, but might never occur again. Just a tiny particle occluding a passage in the valve body or preventing a valve from opening or closing fully could cause what you describe. Once dislodged that particle will almost surely be trapped in the filter. If the problem is caused by a broken valve body spring, then it's very likely that the problem will reoccur. The next move is to see if the problem returns.
