I agree that Trenberth needs to dissociate himself from that editorial.
It is just anti-Trump hysteria, dressed up as science.
But Trenberth also needs to be careful what he says to today's
journalists who always have a strong political agenda. His claim about
“The ocean is warming up systematically”{and therefore driving stronger
hurricanes] is dubious at best. The National Weather Service was much
more scientific in their latest 'Discussion' of Florence. They said:
"A narrow window of opportunity remains during the next
24 hours or so for Florence to strengthen a little when
the hurricane passes over the warmer SSTs and deeper warm
water/higher upper-ocean heat content associated with the
Gulf Stream"
In other words, this is all about ocean currents and the Thermohaline
Circulation, not Global Warming. That is the conventional wisdom.
Trenberth should consider supporting the truth, or if misquoted, fight
back against those who misinterpret everything for political purposes.
The National Hurricane Center has downgraded Florence to a Category 3
hurricane, even though it has broadened into a bigger storm with more
associated energy. It is still a monster, like so many others in the
past.
