Interesting show. IIRC that was an area where the lake "turned over" and released a huge volume of CO2 all at once. Hundreds (or more) in the surrounding valley were suffocated to death without any warning. This happened a couple of decades ago. I think the research team featured in the show were working to provide some degree of warning of such activity.
My interest in active volcanoes is enhanced by having one (Mt. St. Helen) within sight of my house. About 15 years ago I got to ride in a Dash 8 over the fuming crater.
