I love the BBC tv series "The Irish RM" Its set in about 1905-10 in western Ireland. The english Royal Magistrate (Civil Judge) gets all kinds of games played on him by the locals, because he does not know the culture and slang.

The locals see the whole thing as a game, and as a collection system for the crown, so they cheer for jail time and jeer for a fine.
