When they convert a euro car to US, its very likely when they replaced the speedo its not matched to the rear end. Almost EVERY euro I have seen the speedo does not read correct.

The VIN number is a US VIN number. I expect it was built to US specs for European delivery - VERY common thru the mid '80. Many/most gray market
cars had to have the speedometer and the headlights converted to US
standards in the early/mid '80s to be legally imported so that doesn't
help. The car appears to have precisely the equipment that a US car came
with. My '85 190D 2.0 has US gauges and lights, but it has a EURO VIN
number (WDB2011221F117302).

Marshall,
Might you have some insight why the speedo is way off in my 86 190D 2.5 Euro w/auto. PO was original owner reads 65,000mi US speedo no known tranny work. It was used briefly in Germany and was brought in by owner and federalized. It had USDOT lighting, still has euro front bumper that requires customizing the license plate (rear requires work too) Euro VIN. The odometer is presently inoperative and the speedo reads way high. I'm wondering if Euro speedos are driven at a different speed at the head. I haven't researched available drive gears (in trans) or rear axle ratio info. There has to be a way to figure out what the offending item is.
