We’ve had purpose-built recirculating gas fireplaces with fans in a couple of homes and they do a really good job of generating heat. They’re not terribly efficient, but in both cases they weren’t installed with the intention of providing the primary source of heat, but to use when we wanted to heat that immediate area or just take a chill off.
