I'm pretty sure the crinkle stuff around the doors is a version of thermo formed plastic.
Problem with thermo formed plastic is it will "re form" when subjected to heat.. Interior temps in a closed car can easily reach into the 120 / 140 F ranged which is the lower end of thermo form plastic becoming pliable and reforming.. Germany didn't think this one all the way through... I think... My posit is we need to re-invent the molding using another material...
