They've limited to the two basic styles of beer. Every beer you've ever had is fundamentally a lager or ale, those two are the basic styles of brewing. To oversimplify a lager is cold brewed (lagered) while an ale is warm brewed. My preferred porters and stouts are ales, pilsners are an example of lagers... -Curt
