When I worked at Hewlett-Packard in Colorado Springs, I had the opportunity to use a 600 W soldering iron in the course of my work. It put out a lot of heat, which got me wondering. I turned off the room's lights and let my eye dark adapt and, sure enough, I could see the iron glowing a dull red.
