Dry soot or greasy soot?  Check for boost, proper boost control, and excessive 
oil consumption, all of which are turbo related.

Do you have excessive smoke when doing the "smoke test" -- wide open throttle, 
third gear, about 50 mph.  If so you have a fuel delivery issue, turbo problem 
(lack of boost, so excessive fuel) or low compression.

Low compression isn't a sudden thing as a rule, usually gradually gets worse.
