Then they either were not good winter tires or you needed some weight in
the trunk.
Front heavy vehicles are sometimes not so wonderful in snow. I had a
short box Chevy pickup that would not back out of our driveway unless
there was some weight in the box.
Current ice radials generally work pretty well.

Lousy in the snow was likely a matter of the tires as much as anything. Good
winter tires make a huge difference to most vehicles.
