Buy a '95 E320 wagon (gasser), which starts and runs, use the gasser bits to get my '95 cabriolet running (it has been sitting dead for years, supposedly just a bad fuel pump). Once the cab is rolling, install an OM603 (and associated supporting bits) in the wagon.
The wagon body is pretty solid, interior is OK, paint has some blemishes but on the whole not too bad.
