BTO is good stuff.  I don't recall hearing that one before!   Sounds like they had been listening to Mason Proffit.   Mason Profit blended western, bluegrass, and rock with some blues thrown in for goog measure.   They never reached big label stardom, but were a #1 regional/underground band. roughly 1968-74.  The album Movin Toward Happiness is a masterpiece. Ive posted a link to one of their songs from time to time.

REO Speedwagon was the same regional favorite in about the same time period.   I was shocked when REO got mainline airtime in 1988-89 and were introduced as a "new band" on west cost stations.  I thought they were a huge success  in 1970_/+ y 5 yrs.

That article says Stan Jones wrote it and recorded it in late 1948 or early 1949, and everybody else recorded it in 1949. But Wiki isn't always accurate.

BTW, this is what happens when my childhood Rock and Roll hero, Randy Bachman, decides to record a western song:

By 1977, BTO didn't get radio play in USA, the only reason I knew the song was that I bought the album. Apparently Randy quit right after the album was recorded. (it was on the Freeways album in 1977, I have no idea why the youtuber used the 4 wheel drive album art)

Maybe our Randy heard it on the radio in western Canada?
Mitch.
