I was planning to start testing today to see if the antenna was getting 12V
but when my wife got home last night and turned the engine off I heard the
familar sound of the antenna retracting. As suddenly as the problem
started, it disappeared.
Perhaps it's one of those electronic glitches Marshall mentioned? Who
knows? - oh well, hopefully it'll keep working --
Thanks for the suggestions --

Marshall & Trampas,
Unfortunately (or fortunatley depending on your point of view) there
is
no seperate rocker switch for the antenna on my 300D - it's evidently
hard-wired into the radio - unlike many MBs.... Normally, I turn the
engine
off and the radio shuts down after a 5 sec pause - and the antenna starts
retracting at that time. And the reverse is true -- when I crank up -
the
radio comes on with the engine and the antenna extends -
It worked fine until I noticed it yesteday - maybe it's just a
coincidence
that the motor stopped working when the battery was drained?
Your car was manufactured after the '90 midyear replacement of the
rocker switch that older Mercedes have used for decades. You MIGHT try
removing fuse(s) that supply power to the antenna or unplug the
multiconductor plug on the antenna and then reattach it after 30-60
seconds. It's control is now entirely electronic - and I regret that
electronics in Mercedes cars are noticeably less reliable after 15 years
and deteriorate rapidly after that.
