My 300CD has a hum that become noticeable at about 45 MPH.  I believe it's 
due to a bad diff mount (thanks Jim Cathey for your explanation of your 
diagnosis on your 240D).  It doesn't change with acceleration/deceleration, 
and turning one way or the other doesn't affect it either.  It's down the 
list of repairs, but it's definitely something that needs to be done 
eventually.
