And they're willing to take on jobs the big mills won't or can't. As you say they're geared for efficiency so they only take trees of a certain size, I think 12-18" at the butt or something like that.When we had the logging done on our place they cut some huge spruce trees that marked the line. Those trees had been planted as a WPA project in the '30s and were around 36" at the butt. The big mills wouldn't take them, the Amish fell all over themselves to get them. Paid cash...

I should hope so. They're uniquely qualified to react quickly. Mainline business has been all about efficiency for a long time now. Cheaper in steady state, but much slower to react to emergencies, with huge capital startup expenses. The Amish, who are hard workers and don't use much automation, usually on a smaller scale, could probably start a mill quicker than anybody else.
