From what I gather, I would say that it is quite likely it does happen, it
just takes quite a while before you notice it (15-20K miles on Mercedes?).
But that's generally only a problem with unheated oil.  Blending may or may
not be an issue, but it's still WAY better than just tossing straight oil in
the tank...
