My '98 Jetta was super sensitive to getting the wheels on just right, if they
weren't all the way in when you tightened the lugs the wouldn't get really
tight and would work loose again. The car would shake terribly as they
loosened, it would get pretty frightening on the highway.
Worst time it happened it was really cold out and the trunk had frozen shut so
I couldn't get to the lug wrench to tighten them. I had to run the heat on high
for 20 minutes and get the cabin sweltering hot to get the trunk to release.

I mounted 4 brand new tires to the trailer last night. Earlier today while on
a trip to retrieve a 80 300SD parts car I observed a wheel depart the trailer
and continue traveling down the 4 lane highway and into the median. I got it
pulled over a little ways down the road and the wheel was continuing to roll
and stopped conveniently right where I got pulled over. It then hit me. This
was the side I did first and was going to come back to this side to tighten the
lugs. I completely forgot. The 2nd wheel on that side was about to fly off. I
jacked up trailer, stole a lug off each other wheel then proceeded to tractor
supply where they raped me on a set of 5 lugs and a bearing cap that got
knocked off with the wheel. Can’t believe somebody didn’t die but after the
fact I had a good laugh.
