Thanks Randy!  I am going to work at it slowly for a few days and hope for the
best.  I ordered new bolts from Mercedes and have my drill, extractor set and
tap ready just in case.

I would apply heat and penetrating oil. A propane torch should be
sufficient heat. Go slow and you may be successful in getting the old
bolts out.
I did it years ago on a Ford Taurus. It was my wife's car and she was
complaining of little heat so I decided to change out the thermostat.
Those 3.0 V6 engines has very little thin bolts holding down the
thermostat housing. I managed to get them out without breaking them by
slowly working them with heat and penetrating oil.

It was  minus 20 degrees and my garage was unheated. I must have been
tougher back then. I did hang a light fairly close over where I was
working to help keep my hands warm.
