Would larger diameter tires on a 123 improve diesel fuel mileage?

NO! Where did you get that idea?

More distance covered per revolution of the tire. I.E. A taller tire has

Gasser tricks such as this don't apply to diesels. Largely because
they are lean-burn anyway, and tend to only burn the amount of fuel
they need to go. That's one of the big reasons they have better
fuel economy in the first place. Gassers, diesels, and turbines
all have similar efficiencies at full throttle. Diesels are
substantially better than either of the others at partial throttle.

Many of us keep our diesels in 3rd gear around town (higher RPM,
less slushbox shifting, less carboning-up), and find zero impact
on fuel mileage. The exact opposite effect of your proposal.
Interesting, no?

I've always wondered why the '67 200D got 33 mpg around town and only (26-28?) mpg on the highway. These were the figures in the MB manual and my experience was close to those figures. After putting larger tires on that car, the highway mpg went up but the around town mpg stayed about the same. Gerry
