About a half a mile up Villa Nueva away from my house, there’s a mid century
slump block rancher with an inordinately large garage and a large, enclosed
carport that you access from the backyard off the golf course. In true
neighborhood creeper fashion, I’ve known (since about 1990) that this garage
and the carport are filled with all types of MBs.
I always was on the lookout for a time to strike up a conversation with the
fellow, but he is elusive; he is either cloistered in his home out of the heat
or he is in Deutschland.
Last spring, I noticed him out feebly trimming a palm tree and I wanted to stop
but I was on my way to a call-out night shift at the old nuke plant. Figures.
On my way home the next morning I left him a note attached to his front door
introducing myself as a fellow MB enthusiast and a neighbor eager to help him
with home maintenance.
He called me later that afternoon and we talked for about a half an hour and he
told me the that next day they were leaving for Germany for the summer. He said
that he has a man that watches his house but he appreciate the offer and said
that we would meet up once he returned in the fall.
Two days ago I noticed his pristine 500 SL parked in the driveway, so I knew he
had returned.
Yesterday when I was driving by I saw that his garage door was up. As I looked
over, I saw him pouring something into the fuel tank of his black 61 280 SE
Coupe.
We talked for an hour. I saw his garage stable (560 SEL, 500SL, ML350, 280 SE
Coupe, RR Silver Spur) but didn’t see the carport. He says he may be thinning
the herd a bit (he just sold his W126 coupe and his ‘60 190 SL). I called dibs
on the rest for us.
