For my Volvo I got an adapter from etrailer.com that plugs into the factory
harness at the taillight pigtails. No cutting or splicing wires. It has a
separate 12v connection to power the trailer lights so it doesn't change the
load on any of the factory brake/turn/parking light circuits.

I have also seen adapters that clamp on to the wiring and detect current by
induction.

I'd try to avoid splicing directly into the wires, either with
cutting/soldering or "quick splice" crimp-ons that pierce the wire insulation.

Does the dealer sell a wiring adapter for trailer lighting?
