Have somebody hold the key on while you whack the starter/solenoid with a
hammer/mallet.

Got it started, dragged it up to the top of a slope with tow chain and rolled
it down and popped the clutch. It didn't start the first try, though I thought
it should have, ignition was on and there was fuel in the tank. On the second
try, I blipped the key into the "start" position and it fired right up. Perhaps
the computer is being too clever to let it start without "start" engaged? Never
heard of that.

Anyhow, it runs fine. Got it home, shut down, tried to start it about 10
minutes later and nothing. Not even a click. Had to run back to work so will
try to check voltages tonight but my hunch is it's not the battery but the
starter or solenoid.

I had a quick look under the car, starter looks easy enough to get at, two big
bolts holding it to the bellhousing. I was going to hit it with PB Blaster but
it's already quite oily and there is a good bit of oil everywhere on the lower
rear of the engine and oil pan. Leaking rear main seal? Grrr. Never just one
problem.
